Five Minute Makeup Routine

Five Minute Makeup Routine

Makeup has always been a hassle for me–something I hate having to put on, but also necessary to keep me looking somewhat put together. When I swapped my foundation for tinted sunscreen a few years ago, I felt like I could actually enjoy my day while wearing “makeup.” I add a few more elements to my five-minute makeup routine, check it out below!

Before I apply my makeup, I do my full skincare routine. Once that is all done, I start by applying the tinted sunscreen on my face and neck…I just use my hands to apply it. Next, I put on under eye concealer. I have been using the Giorgio Armani Power Fabric Concealer in Shade 2. I cannot say enough good things about this concealer. I have dark circles and this concealer really makes them disappear. I apply the concealer using the wand it comes with and then I blend it using a Blending Sponge.

Next, I apply the bronzer. I love the Hoola Benefit Bronzer because it acts as a bronzer and contouring kit all in one. I use the brush the bronzer comes with to bronze and contour my face. Then, I apply another layer of concealer and finally, I add the Blush. I really love the blushes by Bobbi Brown because they don’t irritate my skin and I think they come in the most beautiful colors. To blend all of the makeup I use the large Luxie brush and I just love it.

I really only wear mascara for holidays and major events (even during a non-pandemic year) so I didn’t include it in this routine. From beginning to end, it should take you only five minutes to apply. It will leave you looking fresh-faced and dewy for the whole day!

Weekly Meal Planning

Weekly Meal Planning

Meal planning–which is different than meal prepping, has changed my life completely and has made it better both physically and financially. Rather than cooking all of my meals for the week on Sunday and then putting them into containers to eat throughout the week, I just plan what I’m going to make throughout the week and make a concise grocery list. By being organized about what I’m going to eat and buy, I rarely waste food and save a lot of money.

Every Sunday I meal plan for our family. I start by pulling out my cookbooks to get inspiration for the meals I will cook during the week, then I take a look at what I already have in the pantry, refrigerator and freezer and finally, I make my list. I usually only plan meals Monday-Thursday because by the end of the week I’m tired and want to go out for dinner or we might have plans.

Once I’ve decided on what I’ll be cooking for the week, I make my list and try to organize it by where each item is located in the store. For example, I put all vegetables together, all meats and fish together, etc. By doing this, I can clearly see what I need from each area so I don’t end up at the register and realize I have forgotten the zucchini I need for my meal one night.

Make your list and check it twice! My sister-in-law got me these grocery notecards from Katie & Co. in Houston and I am so in love with them!

I started getting passionate about meal planning when I moved to Houston seven years ago. First and foremost, I had gained 15 lbs. from eating out too much and I was also looking to save money because I pretty much made no money at my first job in Houston, Neiman Marcus. Through meal planning, I actually learned to cook pretty well and it has become a hobby and passion of mine. Meal planning really saved us during the first months of the pandemic because I was able to get creative with what food we did have and make really delicious meals.

I live for the produce section at Central Market…my happy place.

I think it’s essential to have a plan when you go to the store. I don’t have a lot of free time so I don’t want to have to go to the store multiple times a week. By making a well-thought out list, you can save yourself a ton of time and money by not buying things you don’t need or forgetting things you really do need.

Voila! All done with grocery shopping for the week!

The best part of meal planning is that once you’re done with the shopping, all of your hard work is over for the week (in terms of food.) There’s no last-minute stress about what you’re going to make or do for the family because that’s all done…you just have to cook it!

Happy cooking, friends! I hope you all have a happy and healthy week ahead of you!

Snow Day in Austin

Snow Day in Austin

Snow has come to Austin! When I checked the weather the other day and saw snow on the report for this weekend, I thought it might be a light dusting, but we have had actual snowfall all day. It is beautiful and we have had the best day as a family playing in it (Charlie for the first time ever!)

Growing up in Utah, I loved skiing, but a whole winter of snow and cold temperatures was never really my thing. Now that I know I’ll be back in 65 degree temperatures by Thursday, one day of snow actually seems pretty nice. To stay warm, I broke out all of my winter clothes that I normally pack for trips to Montana and Utah, and my husband has been cooking his bolognese all day.

Grey Pom Hat, Sunglasses, Black Jacket, Black Scarf, Black Leggings, Smartwool Socks, Sorel Boots, Grey Gloves

One thing I’ve learned about surviving cold weather is that it’s more important to be warm than cute… something I wish I would have grasped in middle school. A few years ago I finally broke down and bought the Sorel boots with rubber soles and fur tops. I always thought they were the most atrocious boots, but they have saved my life and mood in the cold! I used to try to wear my Ugg boots everywhere, but once they are wet, you get SO cold!! These boots may not be the cutest, but they keep you warm and dry all day. Underneath my boots, I always wear Smartwool socks, they are the best and wool is a great insulator.

No matter the season, you’ll find me in my Lululemon Align leggings. They work for a yoga class in the summer and for skiing in winter, and especially well for lounging around the house all day. I’m so sad that my Burberry jacket isn’t made anymore because it is one of my all time favorite pieces. It works for several climates because of the liner that is easily removable and it is water-resistant with a stylish hood.

To accessorize my winter look, I threw on my favorite Zara scarf, fluffy hat, Gucci dupe sunglasses and cozy cashmere gloves. I will say that cashmere gloves are not the most practical option in the snow and they are dry clean only, but they are SO soft and feel like blankets on my hands so I love wearing them.

Our first snow day as a family of three!

Of course on a day like this, you have to cook something that will warm your soul so my husband made his bolognese. Several years ago when we were in Napa after hitting a few vineyards on a freezing day, we had lunch in Yountville at Bottega and we had the best bolognese we’ve ever had. After that lunch, Will studied the bolognese and the ingredients they used and obsessively watched Frank Prisinzano cooking videos to create the perfect bolognese.

Will says that contrary to public opinion, bolognese is a meat-based sauce, not a tomato-based sauce. Much like Frankie P, Will does not consider this a recipe, but rather a method so it’s not like the other step-by-step recipes I’ve shared with you all before.

Will whipping up his delicious bolognese!

Will’s Bolognese Method

Ingredients:

¼ lb. Pork

¼ lb. Ground Beef

¼ lb. Lamb

4 Carrots

4 Stalks of Celery

1 Yellow Onion

A few pinches of salt

Pepper to taste

Olive Oil

Whole Milk

White Wine

Chicken Broth

1 can Tomato Paste

1 Bay Leaf

Parmesan Cheese

To Make:

  • Heat olive oil in a deep pan and add salt and pepper. Add all three meats to the olive oil and sauté until brown.
  • Roughly chop vegetables and add them to a food processor. Pulse until blended. Add vegetable mixture to the browned beef.
  • Add white wine to the beef and vegetables and cook until there is no moisture.
  • Add tomato paste and combine.
  • Add milk and broth to the mixture and turn heat to low.
  • Add bay leaf and let mixture simmer for at least 30 minutes but could be several hours if you want.
  • Serve over pasta of your choice and top with freshly grated parmesan.
  • Enjoy!!
Voila! Will’s perfect Bolognese!

I hope you all love this bolognese “method” as much as we do and that you are all staying warm tonight! Happy Sunday friends, I hope you have a great week ahead of you!

Brit’s Thanksgiving Day Outfit Inspo

Brit’s Thanksgiving Day Outfit Inspo

Can you all believe Thanksgiving is this week?! I can’t quite wrap my mind around it, but it’s here so I’ve started my outfit planning. As most of you know, our pup Charlie fractured his leg last week and had to have surgery so I’ve decided to stay in Texas for Thanksgiving rather than traveling with him to see my family. I’m so bummed I won’t get to see them, but I think we will have a fun little holiday at home!

Because this year has been so crazy, I feel like there aren’t any rules when it comes to holiday dressing. Some people are celebrating virtually or having micro celebrations in person. Depending on what your Thanksgiving crew is like, you might be keeping it casual this year, dressing up or something in between.

Casual

I’m guessing for most of us that comfort is key this year. I plan on wearing this outfit for the first part of the day while I’m prepping dinner and the house. I recently bought this amazing tie dye sweatshirt from Pilot and Powell in New Orleans and am totally obsessed with it! I’m pairing it with my favorite cropped Frame jeans and tan mules for an effortless, comfortable look.

Festive

I think we all know this by now, but this Sister Jane dress is my favorite dress I’ve bought this fall and I plan to wear it for dinner on Thanksgiving day. It is currently on sale so hurry up and grab yourself one! I love the plaid and green for Thanksgiving because it makes me feel festive and homey. I love pairing this dress with cowgirl boots to get some modern prairie vibes.

Dressy-Casual

If you’re in a warmish climate like me and want to be dressy and comfortable, look no further than this ADORABLE kitten dress from Ganni! I also picked up this dress at Pilot and Powell and know that it will be something I wear on repeat. I’m wearing it here with a tan waist belt and tan slides for and effortlessly chic look.

Dressy

If you are getting dressed up this Thanksgiving, I would suggest keeping things classic. One of my go-to classic looks for the holidays is throwing on my leather leggings, an oversized white button down, black Manolos and adding a hair bow for good measure. This look is so timeless and will be sure to wow the family and look great in photos!

Tie die sweatshirt, Cropped Jeans, Tan Mules, White Shirt Dress, Tan Waist Belt, Tan Slides, Green Plaid Dress, Tan Cowgirl Boots, Black Hair Bow, Oversized White Button Down, Black Leather Leggings, Black Heels

How are you celebrating Thanksgiving this year?! Leave me a comment and let me know!

Brit’s Holiday Gift Guide for the Ladies in Your Life

Brit’s Holiday Gift Guide for the Ladies in Your Life

Happy Friday, my friends! As promised, I have another fun set of gift guides for you this week and they are for the ladies in your life. From the woman who has everything to your co-workers, friends, teachers and even yourself, I’ve got the perfect gifts for you!

Let’s start with the gifts for friends, co-workers, teachers and neighbors. We all have these people in our lives, but they are probably not our main focus for gift-giving during the holidays. If you’re looking for an adorable gift without spending a lot of money, I would suggest giving miniature bags of Tate’s cookies to your acquaintances and tie the bags with a red ribbon. I did this a few years ago for my co-workers, my husband co-workers and our neighbors and people loved it! It’s affordable, adorable and delicious!

1. Watercolor Playing Cards 2. Veuve and Sugarfina Gift Set 3. Apres Ski Sleeping Mask 4. Monogrammed Mug 5. Diptyque Candle 6. Vintage tree ornaments 7. Starbucks Tumbler 8. Slip Silk Face Mask 9. Monogrammed Mug 10. Sugarfina Cranberry Cocktail Bears 11. Sugarfina Holiday Caramels 12. Tates Mini Cookie Bags with Red Ribbon 13. Shiraz on the Shelf

Based on the feedback from my polls a few weeks ago, it seems like you all have a lot of ladies in your lives who seemingly have everything. For these women, I think getting them something beautiful or unique is the way to go when thinking of gift giving.

1. Organic Cotton Loungewear Set 2. Rialto Coupe Glasses 3. Cocktail Scented Candle 4. Retro Chic Veuve 5. Charging Pad for Apple Electronics 6. Bon Bon Cocktail Glasses 7. Starry Night Clutch 8. Shearling Sandal 9. Hermes Silk Scarf 10. Rose Scented Bubbles 11. Toilet Paper Ornament 12. Burgundy Coffee Table Book

While many of you said you won’t be buying gifts for yourself this year, I decided to still create a gift guide in case you want to treat yourself! These are my dream gifts and I hope to one day be able to buy them all for myself, but until then, I’ll just have fun creating beautiful gift guides for all of you!

I hope you all have enjoyed the gift guides this week! Is there anything you’re still looking for for yourself or your loved ones? Leave me a comment and let me know! Come back next week to see my gift guides for stocking stuffers! Hope you have a great weekend!

Fall Wedding Guest Dresses by Dress Code and Price Point

Fall Wedding Guest Dresses by Dress Code and Price Point

I know it sounds crazy because of the recent spike in COVID cases, but I went to a wedding last weekend (my first since January). I have to admit that I was nervous to go, but since it was the wedding of one of my husband’s best friends, I sucked it up, treated myself to some fancy new face masks and tagged along with my hubs.

The wedding ended up being beautiful and in a huge church so guests had room to spread out. Everyone wore masks and had temperature checks and the reception was all outdoors so I felt really comfortable being there. Attending this wedding made me think about dressing up again because lord knows it has been a minute since most of us have been able to do that and I wanted to share some beautiful dresses with all of you in case you’re attending a wedding this fall!

Me and my hubby at a wedding last weekend. **We did wear face masks at the wedding at only took them off for this picture!**

While I ended up wearing one of my favorite dresses from a last year, I was a little stressed about what to wear.

The invitation said black tie, which traditionally means formal and floor-length, but I had a gut feeling that I would be overdressed in a gown, which my husband and mother-in-law confirmed. As my mother-in-law said, black tie is more for the men to wear tuxedos and for the women to wear elevated cocktails dresses in New Orleans, but that may not be the case where you are. I think good indicators of what a dress code really means are the time of the wedding (after 6 p.m. is definitely more formal) and the location of the wedding and reception.

Let’s start with perhaps the most common dress code, cocktail. Since most weddings are in the evening, cocktail attire is generally on the invitation. For men this means a nice suit and for women it means a nice dress, usually around knee length.

Navy Blue Lace Dress, Tan Heels, Sheer Blush Dress, Metallic Platforms, Burgundy Silk Dress, Tan Bow Heels
I love this burgundy silk dress for a fall wedding. I think it could pass for sure for a cocktail dress code and for black tie optional.

Things get trickier when couples list “Black Tie” as the dress code for their weddings. Traditionally, black tie means to wear a floor length gown, but that is often not the case at these weddings that request black tie on the invitation. For men, black tie does mean to wear a tuxedo or very nice suit, but for women it can in some cases mean a gown, but more often than not, it really means an elevated cocktail dress.

If you’re invited to a wedding that really is formal…say a night time wedding at a really fancy location like a fabulous ballroom or if the couple has rented out a museum , then you will want to go with a floor-length gown.

Navy Blue Off the Shoulder Gown, Tan Heels, Black Halter Gown, Black Strappy Heels, Black and Pink One Shoulder Bow Gown, Black Heels with Sparkly Bow

I love this black gown for weddings or any formal event you might have in the future. It is timeless, elegant and beautiful.

As we all know, weddings have been thrown for a loop by coronavirus and one trend I’ve noticed springing up is outdoor day weddings. Inspired by the outdoors and rustic decor, I would wear a casual flowy dress (even a bit prairie) with a great pair of boots to a wedding like this!

Green Plaid Dress, Tan Boots, Floral Black Shirt Dress, Navy Blue Wrap Dress, Tan Boots, Blue Bohemian Dress, Tan Boots

My favorite dress this fall! Perfect for a fun lunch out or a rustic outdoor wedding.

If you do have a wedding you’re contemplating going to, make sure you feel comfortable going and if you do go, make a plan. I made sure I had face masks and lots of hand sanitizer in my bag and tried to keep enough distance between myself and other guests. But most of all, have fun! We are living in a crazy time so we deserve to have a little *healthy and safe* fun!

Brit’s Gift Guide for Her, Him and Them

Brit’s Gift Guide for Her, Him and Them

Happy Friday, everyone! Can you believe we made through this week?! Luckily, the gauntlet that is 2020 is ALMOST over and that means Christmas is upon us!! I have started my gift guides for the season and am so excited to share them with y’all! Today, I am sharing my guides for Her, Him and Them.

Let’s start with the ladies! I developed this guide at several different price points and I think these gifts are most applicable for your friends, sisters, sister-in-laws, moms, mother-in-laws, grandmothers, girlfriends, fiancés and wives.

  • Recipe Binder
    • Tab Dividers for Recipe Binder
    • You’ve probably noticed by now, but I love cooking and I love pulling recipes from all over the place! This adorable binder is such an upgrade from the basic Office Max version I was using before and I truly love it! Such a thoughtful gift for the chefs and hostesses in your life! Pair this set with a cute Apron and Spatulas and you’ve got a beautiful gift.
  • Rose Carmine Rainbow Sweater
    • I am obsessed with anything Rose Carmine, but particularly this stunning sweater and would love to get this under the tree this year…*hint, hint, Will!!!* It is a bit of a splurge, but IMO, totally worth it!
  • El Arroyo Coffee Mug
    • I saw this mug the other day and laughed out loud. At $13, this is a unique and hilarious gift that is perfect for a friend. Pair it with a Starbucks gift card for some holiday cheer.
  • Mama beaded bracelet
    • So cute for the mamas in your life! Whether it is your girlfriends, wife, mother, sister or in-laws, this is a fun gift for every mama!
  • Nordstrom Pajama Set
    • This pajama set is to die for!! I bought several sets for myself and family members during the anniversary sale and cannot recommend it enough! First and foremost, it is so cozy, but it is affordable and machine washable and dryable!! Seriously saves me so much time compared to my Eberjey and Bedhead sets, but same quality.
  • Lululemon Wunder Under Leggings
    • Whether the women in your life enjoy working out or not, we’re all wearing leggings…a majority of the time lately and IMO, these are the best. They fit many different body types perfectly and last forever! Can’t go wrong with these.
  • Louis Vuitton Neverfull
    • This bag is a must for every woman. It is timeless, durable, practical and elegant. I got mine several years ago and it is my most-used bag to this day. It can also transition from an everyday bag to a work bag or diaper bag seamlessly.
  • Glitter Golden Goose Sneakers
    • Who doesn’t love Golden Goose sneakers? This luxe euro sneaker brand isn’t going out of style anytime soon so why not treat your lady to an extra special glittlery pair for the holidays?
  • Jo Malone Perfume
    • I LOVE Jo Malone Perfume and think it makes for a wonderful gift. During the holidays, Neiman Marcus stores have artists who come to hand paint all Jo Malone products and I think giving someone one of these painted bottles is extra special. My favorite scent is Earl Grey and Cucumber…it is very light and smells like you just walked out of the spa. I will say that perfume is a very personal choice so maybe check your girlfriend/partner/mother’s bathroom before buying a fragrance.
  • Hanacure Facial Set
    • Hands down, this is the best at-home facial money can buy. For $30, you are getting fabulous packaging, a fun at-home system and a facial that can tighten and brighten your skin.

Let’s all take a minute and admit that it is really hard to buy gifts for the men in our lives. With that said, I have learned a few tips about giving gifts to men over the years. For my dad, I know that a handwritten note is the absolute best gift I can give him, but outside of that, I’ve started paying attention to what my dad buys for himself. Mostly golf stuff and Peter Milar anything. So whether it is your dad, husband, brother or grandfather, look at what they buy themselves and maybe get them something they already have in another color or pattern.

When I was telling my dad about the gift guides, he told me that when you’re thinking of a gift to get the men in your life, you should follow their hobby. So basically, if they’re a golfer or a car fanatic, look at that and then do some research on a great gift in that area. Also, pay attention to what they say they want. My husband and dad both want very few things in this world so whenever I hear them say, “oh wow! I want that!” I immediately make a note in my phone and save it for their birthday or Christmas.

  • Hand-dipped Glasses
    • These hand-dipped cocktail glasses come from the coolest store in Houston and now Austin, Manready Mercantile,  and they are a wonderful gift for the guys in your life. You could add a bottle of their favorite drink and you’re all set. They also come in orange and pink if you don’t like the black.
  • Texas Star Tee
    • Also from Manready Mercantile, I love this tee shirt as a gift. Now more than ever, we are living in comfy clothes so why not get cute clothes from a great local shop?
  • Versace Slippers
    • If your man is a little bit extra, these Versace Slippers are sure to be the perfect gift for them! Not only is there extra branding, but the color and quality are fabulous!
  • Tequila Decanter
    • This Jonathan Adler rocket decanter is made for other liquors too, but I know my husband will prefer the tequila decanter. This is great for a bar cart and for when you have company over.
  • Peter Millar Pullover
    • This Peter Millar pullover is a great gift for the men in your life. Classic colors, high-quality and perfect for so many occasions, this is a crowd pleaser for sure.
  • Ugg Slippers
    • Doesn’t everyone need slippers for Christmas? Maybe I’m crazy, but I’m always cold so I wear slippers more than shoes, but most men I know love a good pair of slippers.
  • Cigar Case with Cedar Lining
    • I ordered this for my husband for his birthday this year because he said he wanted it and he enjoys cigars once in a while. It is a beautiful gift from a local shop in Fredericksburg, Texas and relatively affordable. I also got him a few cigars to go in it and he absolutely loved it!
  • Customized Golf Balls
    • From what I’ve heard from all of the male golfers in my life, Pro V1s are the gold standard in golf balls. For my dad’s birthday, I ordered him a custom set of these golf balls with Lar Bear and a shamrock on them. They were about four months late arriving because of COVID, but when they did finally arrive, he loved them and thought they were funny.
  • Zak Tumbler
    • I love these Zak Tumblers from Target! They are ⅓ of the price of Yeti Tumblers, work just as well and come in great colors! My husband uses these every day for everything from coffee to cocktails.
  • ON Sneakers
    • Ok y’all, I’m sure you’ve seen these sneakers everywhere, but my dad bought several colors and he is obsessed with them! Scoop up a pair for your man and I’m sure they will be thrilled!

Now for the couples in your life or your parents or mother and father-in-law. For this category, I’m thinking of your married friends, brother and sister-in-laws, married cousins, etc. When I think of buying gifts for my parents and couples in general, I try to think of things that both a man and woman would like or that would be good for the home or entertaining.

For this gift guide, I’ve shown items individually and have added suggestions of things you can pair them with if you want to elevate your gift.

  • Coravin Wine System
    • For the wine lovers in your life! The Coravin is a game changer for wine drinkers. How many times have you been at home alone and wanted a glass of wine, not the whole bottle and didn’t want the rest to go bad? This system can serve wine in small amounts without losing the integrity of the bottle. Pair this with a bottle of wine and a set of glasses and you will have an ideal gift!
  • Oyster and Lemon Ice Bucket
    • I absolutely love these Katie Kime ice buckets to give to couples as a gift! My personal favorite is the oyster and lemon design, but there are so many cute options to choose from. You can also get these monogrammed which is a great personal touch. I would pair this with a nice bottle of champagne and you’re all set!
  • Floral Cheese Knives and Marble Cheese Board
    • These cheese knives and marble cheese boards are sure to be a crowd pleaser for your friends and family members! Whether you’re entertaining or just making a cheese board at home, this set is perfect and an affordable gift!
  • Terracotta Pomegranate and or Monogram Paper Napkins for Powder Room
    • This terracotta pomegranate serves not only as a beautiful display to dress up a powder room, but also as a diffuser. I also recommend Monogram napkins as a wonderful gift for friends and family. To dress them up a bit, you can present them with a tray to hold them in.
  • Nespresso Machine
    • This one doesn’t need much of an explanation, but I have never met anyone who doesn’t love Nespresso machines! They are the best and so easy to use. Pair the machine with a sleeve of their favorite coffee pods and maybe some cute mugs and you’re good to go!
  • Gift Card to their favorite restaurant
    • Restaurants have been struggling during the pandemic and we all love a nice out for dinner so think about your loved ones’ favorite restaurants and get them a gift card to their favorite spot.

I hope y’all loved these gift guides and that I’ve been able to help you kick off your holiday shopping! Come back next week to see my next set of gift guides!
