Packing Guide for Chicago and Destination Kohler

Packing Guide for Chicago and Destination Kohler

I can’t believe we are finally going on a vacation this summer! Because of our housing drama, we were forced to cancel all of our trips this summer except for one…of course it is a golf trip, but regardless, I am excited to travel and get out of the Texas heat for a few days.

This weekend we will be going to Chicago for one night and Destination Kohler for a few days so my husband, dad and a couple of their friends can have a Ryder Cup Style golf tournament with one another. Thankfully, my mom and sweet Charlie are coming on the trip too. We plan to do an architecture river cruise and dinner in Chicago and lots of spa time, walking and water activities while we are in Kohler.

Since the vibe of this trip is relaxation and fun dinners, I’m bringing mostly casual clothes with a few fun pieces for our dinners. I am also so excited to read my new book, Golden Girl, written by the “queen of beach reads” Elin Hilderbrand. Of course we will be on the shores of Lake Michigan, but that counts as a beach, right?

Stay tuned next week for my travel guide to Chicago and Destination Kohler!

Summer is on its way, y’all! There are so many things I love about summer, but my favorite is probably all of the beautiful dresses I get to wear during the season. Mother’s Day Gift Guide

Mother’s Day Gift Guide

Mother’s Day is just around the corner! May 9th, to be exact, which is only three weeks away. Not to worry though, I’ve got gift suggestions to celebrate all of the mamas in your life from your mom to your grandma, sisters and friends.

If you’re looking for a mommy and me look for a Mother’s Day brunch with the fam, check out this adorable matching dress set from Zimmermann. If I were wearing the mama version of this dress, I’d pair it with Tom Ford sunnies, a chic Lee Radziwill bag from Tory Burch and studded Christian Louboutin Wedges.

Jo Malone Earl Grey and Cucumber makes the perfect Mother’s Day Gift and it comes beautifully gift wrapped!

For the beauty lovers in your life, you can’t go wrong with the CE Ferulic serum from Skinceuticals. It is definitely a splurge and I have yet to meet a woman who hasn’t loved it, which makes it THE perfect gift to get for your baby mama! If they already have that and have dry skin, treat them to the La Mer Moisturizing cream. This moisturizer is so luxurious and will be such a pleasant surprise. If you’re looking for a fabulous perfume, I always recommend the Jo Malone fragrances. My personal favorite is Earl Grey and Cucumber because it is light, refreshing and reminds me of the spa. Fragrances can often be personal so a helpful tip to find the right scent for the mamas in your life is to look at what they already have. Just take a picture of their perfume bottle and buy them a new one…I know it will be much appreciated!

I know my mom loves pajamas so I always get her a new pair for Mother’s Day and this year will be no different. I absolutely love this beautiful floral pajama set from Nordstrom. If your mom is like mine and loves the cozy things in life, I’m sure she would also love a Barefoot Dreams blanket or a pair of the ultra light-weight Eva Birkenstocks that will be perfect for running around in this summer.

To help get the ladies in your life ready for summer, I know I would *LOVE* to get a matching swimsuit and pareo from Agua by Agua Bendita! It is a total splurge, but so beautiful!! I also love the mommy and me Mark and Graham straw beach totes. These make the perfect gift because you can customize the colors and add a monogram which is a thoughtful touch. If you’re traveling this summer, I’d suggest getting the MZ Wallace Large tote or the crossbody bag as a gift because these are truly the best bags to travel with and are so stylish. Speaking of travel, every girl needs a great pair of shoes to run around in and I think Veja’s are the best everyday sneaker, check out this all white pair for the summer.

If you’re looking to give your mama friends a nice gift to celebrate them, I think a rosé themed gift is perfect! You can get them a cute bottle of Cameron Diaz’s Avaline Rosé. If you want to add on to that, throw in a Vinglace bottle chiller and a Rosé All Day Sleeping Mask.

My two favorite ladies– my mama and my grandma on my wedding day!

I hope you all have a beautiful Mother’s Day this year and have a chance give the ladies in your life a big hug!

Watercolor Packing List

Watercolor Packing List

We are heading back to one of my favorite places…Watercolor, Florida!! As many of you know, we love Watercolor and have been going there A LOT over the past year. I have been visiting this area for about a decade and my husband and his family have been going for pretty much his whole life. To get ready for my trip, I’m sharing my packing list!

This trip to Watercolor is even more exciting than usual because we’re not only going to enjoy the beach, but we also get to celebrate Easter with our friends at the Chapel at Seaside which is going to be so special.

For those of you who don’t know, Watercolor and Seaside are two communities that back up to one another along the iconic stretch of the beachside highway known as 30A. You can distinguish where you are in this area by the architecture. Seaside is known for having almost dollhouse looking homes painted in pinks, yellows, blues, greens and white and Watercolor is filled with larger homes mostly painted in whites, blues and greens. All of these towns are connected with bike paths so you never have to drive anywhere which I love.

The most beautiful beach.

The weather along the Florida panhandle is gorgeous during the month of April and it’s usually a lot less busy than spring break and the summer. Since the vibe in the area is casual chic, I’m packing mostly dresses and pastel-colored swimsuits. I never go to the beach without packing a few sunhats…I live for my Eugenia Kim hat and it is just amazing, but it is kind of a hassle to pack. If you’re flying or don’t want to deal with bringing a big hat, check out this foldable one I found for less than $10. I use it way more than my other hats and I get so many compliments on it.

Have you been to Watercolor or anywhere on 30A? What are your favorite things to do in the area?

Super Bowl LV: Healthy Eating at Home

Super Bowl LV: Healthy Eating at Home

Tom Brady, the Chiefs and The Weeknd…could I ask for a better Super Bowl lineup? I have had a crush on Tom Brady since middle school and the Chiefs are my favorite team in the NFL so I will be cheering for both teams this Sunday and eagerly anticipating The Weeknd’s performance. Since we’ll be celebrating from home, I’m making my favorite chili, guacamole and buffalo chicken wings for me and my husband to snack on for the big game.

Since I went to two years of high school in Kansas and my parents lived there for more than a decade, I consider myself a Chief’s fan and I love game day at Arrowhead!

To start off our Super Bowl celebrations, I will be whipping up a big bowl of my favorite guacamole. I stumbled upon this creation one day when I was out of red onion and tomato so instead I used white onion and no tomato and it ended up being the best guacamole I’ve ever made.

Because of the cooler weather, I think Chili is perfect to cook for Super Bowl Sunday. For whatever reason, I prefer to use pinto beans for my chili so it’s a little bit different, but I love it. You can warm up some tortillas or biscuits for dipping and top the chili with sour cream, cheese and green onions. We also love buffalo chicken wings in our household. I get the pre-marinated buffalo chicken wings from Central Market and cook them at 450 degrees and 20 minutes on each side. I know this sounds a little aggressive, but they get so crispy and delicious.

And of course chicken wings! I buy mine pre-marinated and cook them on a wire rack and baking sheet at 450 degrees for 20 minutes on each side.

I love how all of these foods are great for snacking on throughout the day and they are exactly unhealthy. What are you cooking this weekend for the Super Bowl and who are you cheering for?

Chicken Night at Home

Chicken Night at Home

Chicken Night has become a staple in the McAshan household during quarantine. I originally got the idea from our country club in Houston–every Thursday night, the club had “Chicken Night” where they would have a buffet of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, Mac and cheese, fried okra and gravy. When we moved to Austin at the beginning of quarantine, I decided to make a *somewhat* healthier version of Chicken Night at home.

I make two versions of chicken for our Chicken Nights–Honey Chipotle Chicken and Honey Garlic Chicken. I serve both our favorite salad from HEB. When I make the Honey Chipotle Chicken, I serve it with Mac and cheese and when I make the Honey Garlic Chicken, I serve it with Basmati rice.

Although these aren’t the healthiest meals ever, they are comfort foods that my husband enjoys and having a staple each week for dinner makes my meal planning a lot easier.

Since I know I’ll be making a version of Chicken Night each week, I always have Panko, HEB Basmati Rice, Annie’s Mac and Cheese, honey, San Marcos Chipotle Peppers, Crystal Hot Sauce, ketchup, liquid aminos, corn starch, chicken tenders and HEB Cracked Pepper Caesar salad stocked in my house.

The chicken recipes are pretty much the same other than the flour mixtures and sauces. To prep my tenders, I set up an assembly line starting with the pounded tenders, buttered sheet pan and three bowls for dipping the chicken in–starting with the flour mixture, the lightly beaten eggs and finally the panko.

Voila!

Happy cooking friends, I hope you enjoy Chicken Night as much as we do!

Winter Essentials on the Winter Solstice

Winter Essentials on the Winter Solstice

Happy Winter Solstice, y’all! As we celebrate the first day of winter and a whole new season of energy, I’m sharing my winter must-haves to keep you warm and stylish. As a native of Salt Lake City, I’ve had a few years to figure out how to keep myself warm in the cold and I think the key to staying warm is layering, having a really good coat and solid shoes.

I won’t lie, Winter is probably my least favorite season. I hate being cold and I generally don’t enjoy wearing heavy clothes, but over the years, I’ve come up with some cute ways to stay warm and keep my style. Living in Texas, our winters are quite a bit milder than other parts of the country, but it still gets cold here and when I visit family in Montana, I have to bundle up!

Tennis shoes have also been a life saver for me during the winter months. During spring, summer and fall, I live in sandals so it is hard for me to give those up in the winter. I love Golden Goose sneakers because they are super stylish, go with all of my outfits and think they are worth the money for sure. If you’re not ready to make the splurge, Steve Madden has made much more affordable versions. I recently bought the Steve Madden star fur slides specifically for chilly walks with my dog in the morning. I love these shoes because they are warm and they are so easy to slide on and off. I also love the price! I got them on sale for $49…10 percent of the price of what most Golden Goose sneakers will cost you!

My other favorite shoes for the winter are my mini Uggs! I have been wearing these boots for years and I no shame wearing them all around town! I really only like the tan Uggs because I think they are a great neutral and I love the mini size!

Regardless of the season, you’ll find me in my duster sweaters…I literally live in these. I have a black, white and tan duster and throw them on over everything thing. In the winter months, I layer the sweater with long sleeve shirts and sometimes a scarf over the top and in warmer months, I throw them over a tank and jeans or a dress.

I have a hard time staying warm so blanket scarves are a necessity for me in the winter. I love getting mine from Madewell and Gap, but I recently found one I really like at Target. Scarves can often be incredibly expensive and high-maintenance to care for, but at these stores, the scarves are affordable, well-made and come in the cutest colors. You can easily throw them on over a sweater or layer them under a jacket. I also love my pom pom hat. I wear mine around town, skiing or inside if I’m really cold!

What are your winter essentials? Let me know what you’ll be buying to keep you warm this season and I hope you all have a beautiful winter solstice!
